Got a hankering for something sweet to bring to a Friday night gathering? Need an easy dessert for church night? Try this buttermilk pie recipe. It’s the perfect Southern dessert!
Ingredients
- 1⁄2 cup butter or 1⁄2 cup margarine, melted
- 1 1⁄2 cups sugar
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 3 eggs, beaten
- 1 pinch salt (unless you use salted butter)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 deep dish graham cracker pie crust

Directions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F.
- Beat the butter, salt and sugar together until light.
- Add the eggs and beat; then beat-in the vanilla.
- Sift the dry ingredients together and add to the batter alternatively with the buttermilk; beat until smooth.
- Pour the mixture into a pie shell and bake at 325°F for 50-60 minutes.
- Your pie should turn a nice, golden brown and a knife inserted should come out clean.
- Let the pie cool for an hour before cutting and serving. You may chill if you like, but we prefer the pie fresh and slightly warm.
Things we learned while making this recipe
- If you buy salted butter, you do not need to add any salt.
- Mix the butter and sugar until it’s well-combined. The texture should be like smooth, wet sand. If you undermix, the pie will have a grainy texture.
- Don’t overmix the eggs. Since we’re using whole eggs for this recipe, they don’t need to be heavily beaten. If you overmix, the eggs will separate during the bake, resulting in an off texture.
- Don’t overbake! Only bake until you can remove a knife cleanly from the pie, then let it cool. Overbaking can also cause the pie to separate. Remember, we’re making buttermilk pie, not scrambled egg pie!
- We think this pie is absolutely best when it’s still warm. Not too hot, or it will scorch your mouth!
- Be very careful while pouring the mixture into the crust or putting it in the oven to avoid spills. If you can’t tell from our photos, we might have ovrfilled it and gotten a little careless…
